Zakynthos:- Navagio Beach, shipwreck look out, an accident waiting to happen! (Video that shocks)

Shipwreck cove or navagio, is known for its stunning scenery, including the iconic shipwreck, and is an area full of photo opportunities. It is also an area that is one of the most photographed images and is recognised worldwide. It seems that everyone wants to get that extra special photo and some even try to outdo those that are already displayed throughout the social media platforms. However, it is also surrounded by high cliffs with a history of accidents.

A reminder.
The first accident that shocked not only the community as a whole but internationally was in 2012. A 42 year old
British tourist died in a parachuting accident after his parachute snagged on the cliff face. Calls for safety measures were demanded. In 2015 the body of a 32 year-old US citizen of Chinese descent was found on the beach. The man had been missing and his rented motorcycle was found in a parking lot 200 meters above the beach. No one knows for sure, but perhaps he just got too close to the cliff's edge. Then in April, 2017 another death, which had locals and our authorities questioning the safety issues surrounding the area, especially the view point. It wasn't soon after in June, 2017 that another tourist met her death whilst trying to get that perfect selfie.

Safety rails.
This year authorities have put up safety rails and have made a walk way so that our visitors can enjoy the environment they are visiting with, what was thought up until now, all the safety measures implemented. The project cost tax payers money around 500 thousand euros and we were all relieved that the area finally seemed safe enough for visitation until.....
Yesterday, a video and photographs circulated social media platforms that showed visitors not only going out on the ledge of the cliff face but even hurdling rocks so close to the edge that IF they fell they would certainly meet their death! Outcries on social media by not only Zakynthians but people across the world, why are these people placing themselves in such a dangerous situation.... all for a selfie???
Video below shows the danger.

Safety should ALWAYS come first!
As we have mentioned in Zakynthos Informer many times and have posted about the issue of taking selfies, we plead again, as author Chrissie Parker wrote when things did go terrible wrong..
If there’s a ledge they stand on it, if there’s a fence they climb it, if there’s cliff they perch on it. Whilst we would all love to take that ultimate photo, putting your life at risk for a photo just isn’t worth it. Not only are you risking your life, you’re risking the life of others around you. You’re also risking those who have to deal with the aftermath of a situation when it goes horribly wrong.
In the last week someone tragically died at Navagio falling over the edge whilst trying to take a selfie; a very sad situation. But unbelievably tourists are still risking their lives on a daily basis, repeating the same actions, climbing the lookout fence to get closer to the edge or scrambling through vegetation to walk the cliff top to get that “ultimate view” of the shipwreck.
No selfie/photo is worth risking YOUR LIFE. Please think, just for a moment, about others who will be affected if you slip and fall. Your family, your friends and those who may watch it happen, or those who may have to deal with aftermath. It affects so many people.
The island of Zakynthos is a beautiful, photogenic place, but please try and enjoy it without putting your life at risk and ruining what could be a wonderful experience that you'll remember for the rest of your life.

You are here on holiday visiting our beautiful island, please don't let it be the last!
