From BBC Radio 1 to Zakynthos: Celebrating Our Very Own Zakynthos Informer Admin, Bobby Gee!9/25/2026 . Over 50 years behind the microphone, a remarkable career spanning countries and generations, and now a familiar voice here on our beautiful island of Zakynthos. Here at Zakynthos Informer, we are delighted to share a little more about one of our very own administrators, Bobby Gee, following a wonderful feature published by Zante Times on 22 September 2026. Many of our members will recognise Bobby through his involvement with Zakynthos Informer, but there is much more to his story than you might realise! Bobby's passion for radio has taken him on an extraordinary journey, from the legendary studios of BBC Radio 1 to Radio Bahrain, and eventually to the sunny shores of Zakynthos, where he continues doing what he loves. A passion for radio that began at just 14. For Bobby, radio wasn't simply a career choice. It was a passion that began at a remarkably young age. At just 14 years old, he sent a demonstration recording to the famous offshore station Radio Caroline. Although he was turned down because of his age, that early rejection certainly didn't stop him! In fact, Bobby reportedly still has the rejection letter to this day. By 1969, he had attracted interest from Radio Nordsee International, and his journey into the exciting world of broadcasting was well underway. One particularly memorable chapter involved BBC Radio 1. After sending a recording to Derek Chinnery, producer of the legendary Emperor Rosko, Bobby was invited into the Radio 1 studios to broadcast live. Imagine being a young radio enthusiast, surrounded by vinyl records, professional broadcasting equipment and legendary presenters such as Alan Freeman! It was the sort of opportunity that many aspiring DJs could only dream of. From Britain to Bahrain: A career across the airwaves Bobby's career continued to develop through hospital radio, RAF Radio, Radio Luxembourg and Radio 210, alongside his work as a resident DJ at the Top Rank Suite in Reading. His journey eventually took him overseas to Radio Bahrain, where he presented the daily breakfast programme for 14 months. One particularly poignant memory from this period was being on air when news broke of Elvis Presley's death in August 1977. For anyone involved in music broadcasting, reporting the passing of such an influential figure must have been an unforgettable moment. And Bobby was there, behind the microphone, sharing that news with his listeners. Helping the next generation find their voice. Bobby's contribution to broadcasting extends beyond presenting radio programmes. Throughout his career, he has also worked in station management, promotions and the development of new broadcasting talent. One of his notable achievements was establishing Blast 1386, the student radio station at Reading College. During this period, the station received a Sony Award and eight Internet Radio awards. Perhaps even more importantly, Bobby helped provide opportunities for young people hoping to establish careers in broadcasting and the wider media industry. According to the Zante Times feature, more than ten students involved in the project went on to secure full-time professional careers in the media. That is quite a legacy! And now, broadcasting from beautiful Zakynthos! After decades of broadcasting, travelling and working with radio stations across the world, Bobby's journey has brought him to our beautiful island. Today, you can hear him presenting Bobby Gee in the Morning on 88.6 Island Radio, bringing music and entertainment to listeners across Zakynthos. TUNE IN Bobby Gee in the Morning 88.6 Island Radio Monday – Friday 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Programme details reported by Zante Times, September 2026. From the early days of vinyl records and radio studios to today's modern broadcasting technology, Bobby has witnessed enormous changes in the industry. Yet one thing has remained constant: his love of radio. And we think there is something rather special about a career that has taken someone across the world, only for them to continue sharing that passion from an island as beautiful as Zakynthos. A familiar voice on Zakynthos radio Bobby's contribution to radio here in Zakynthos extends beyond his daily shows on Island Radio. For four years, he also presented the Late Show on Stigma Radio 97.6, broadcasting Sunday through Thursday from 10pm until 1am, alongside his daytime commitments at Island Radio. That's quite a few hours behind the microphone, but when radio has been your passion for more than half a century, it's clearly something you never tire of! Bobby would also like to take this opportunity to express his sincere thanks to the management at Stigma Radio, particularly Dennis, for their support and friendship over the years. As Bobby himself puts it, a special thank you for "putting up with me over the years!" It's a lovely acknowledgement of the people and friendships that have been part of his broadcasting journey here on the island. And after more than 50 years of genuine live radio, one thing is certain: Bobby's love for the microphone is as strong as ever. A familiar face behind Zakynthos Informer Of course, for those of us within the Zakynthos Informer community, Bobby is also one of our administrators.
