The Hellenic Police have announced that a nationwide test of the Civil Defense alarm sirens will take place on Wednesday, October 1, as part of the annual military exercise “PARMENION-25.”
The test will involve all Civil Defense sirens across the country, and it is purely procedural. Authorities emphasize that there is no cause for public concern or alarm, as the activation is strictly a test of the emergency warning system. In parallel with the sirens, church bells across Greece will also sound in a specific rhythm—a series of short chimes lasting approximately three minutes, synchronized with the siren alerts. Details of the Siren TestAccording to the official schedule released by the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the sirens will be activated in stages across different regions. The test will include variations in duration, tone, and intensity to simulate different types of alerts, including:

Majority of Canceled Flights to Depart Today; No Serious Damage Reported on the Island Zakynthos, Greece – Flights to and from Zakynthos that were canceled last night due to persistent low cloud cover are resuming operations from noon onwards today. Of the 27 flights affected, at least 24 are expected to proceed as planned. These flights include international routes to and from the United Kingdom, Poland, the Netherlands, France, as well as one domestic flight to Athens International Airport (El. Venizelos). More than 90% of affected passengers spent the night in local hotels at no personal cost, thanks to coordination between local authorities and tourism services on the island. Despite the two-day spell of bad weather, Zakynthos largely avoided serious incidents. This was credited to proactive measures taken by the Municipality, the Sub-Region, and the Civil Protection Agency. Key flood-prone areas—such as Lithakia, Agalas, and other vulnerable zones—were preemptively cleared and secured. The only notable disruption occurred last night in Alykanas, where a road was flooded for over three hours. Twelve tourists staying at a nearby hotel requested relocation after water began entering the property’s courtyard. Authorities quickly responded, and the guests were safely transferred. Additionally, on the Agalas–Lithakia road, where concerns had been highest, a minor landslide involving gravel and soil was reported. The incident was swiftly managed by Civil Protection crews already stationed in the area with heavy machinery on standby.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely, but normalcy has largely returned to the island. source:- Hmera Zakynthos. The ERT news Zakynthos journalist, Andreas Papadimitriou reported on the ERTNEWS news bulletin at 20.00 the latest developments from the fire front that is burning the mountain region of our island. According to his response, the situation remains extremely difficult, as the strong winds are constantly changing direction, making it impossible to predict the course of the fire. Agalas is already counting houses and businesses that have burnt, with the flames having invaded the village. At the moment, a large front is also raging in mountain area of Lithakia, while the total extent of the fire in Zakynthos reaches 20 kilometers, from Keri to Machairado. Despite the reinforcement of ground forces from Patras, the morphology of the terrain and the lack of aerial means – as only one helicopter was operating before sunset, making the fire difficult to extinguish. Evacuations in Agalas and Keri took place early in the morning, while visitors were also removed from tourist units. 150 tourists from Keri and another 50 from Agala. All have been moved to other hotel premises and are safe. Residents are urged to strictly follow the instructions of the emergency services and the 112 emergency messages, as the situation can change within minutes.
The power outage in many areas creates additional obstacles, as the water pumps for water extraction can not be operated, making conditions for firefighting and for water tank vehicles difficult. At the same time, the atmosphere remains stifling, although in Lithakia the wind is currently blowing in a direction that reduces the smoke in the area. Andreas Papadimitriou also conveyed the anguish of the residents, who remain on standby, while volunteers have been assisting since the morning, offering water, food and assistance to the fire crews. The next few hours are considered critical, with the authorities hoping for a weakening of the winds so that more drops can be made and the destruction to be limited. According to the head of the Civil Protection of the Region, Maria Mouzaki, approximately 15 thousand acres of virgin forest and agricultural crops have been burnt so far. In an interview on the National t.v station Open, she mentioned that we are in for an extremely difficult night. At the moment it seems that the winds have dropped, lets hope that our fire services who are battling the fire now on the ground only have luck on their side and it is extinguished. Fire now: The fire is raging in Zakynthos and is difficult to control By order of the local authorities, businesses and hotels (in the Apelati area) were evacuated, as Agalas and Keri continue to be threatened. The peculiarity of the terrain is such that it creates turbulence, making the work of extinguishing the fire very difficult. Residents have been ordered to move away to the city of Zakynthos, so as not to cause any problems. The flames have surrounded Agalas village, while evacuations have also taken place in the area. One house was also burnt, but it was deserted. Many farmhouses and houses, which are located within the agro-forestry area, are at risk. ****A plea to ALL visitors and residents NOT to approach the area, our authorities are trying to battle the fire and do not need "on lookers" to obstruct their mission of putting out the fire.
