The images are shocking: burnt trees, charred wooden and metal structures, ash and thick smoke hanging over the once vibrant meeting point for residents and visitors. According to the latest information reported on the 15:00 news bulletin of ERTNEWS by ERT Zakynthos journalist Andreas Papadimitriou, the front in Keri is improving, however the situation in Agalas remains extremely difficult.
Mr. Papadimitriou reported that the fire has penetrated the settlement of Agalas, burning trees even in the center of the village, while resurgences are constantly being dealt with by ground and air forces. Thanks to the superhuman efforts of firefighters and volunteers, no damage has been recorded to houses, only to kiosks, roofs and farmhouses on the outskirts of the settlement. Of particular concern was an incident involving a hotel that housed approximately 50 people, which was not evacuated in time, despite the 112 message. Rescue forces had to open an escape route to prevent injuries or even loss. The morphology of the area, combined with strong winds, makes firefighting difficult, while the atmosphere in Agalas remains stifling. In Keri, which was also evacuated early, the picture is more controlled, although residents and tourists have been removed from hotel units. As Andreas Papadimitriou emphasized, compliance with the authorities' instructions is vital for the safety of citizens but also for facilitating the work of the firefighting forces, who continue to operate with every available means. As for our visitors, Zakynthos Informer would like to advise that NO ONE should approach the area and that as of tomorrow Wednesday, 13th August ALL forest roads are closed including the Shipwreck view point. An announcement has also been given that anyone who have relatives or friends who cannot be reached by telephone to congregate at the area of our local bus station KTEL, for the authorities to take the necessary actions.
